The sensor transmits a stream of pulses which are reflected back from the process surface . The distance to the surface is calculated using the time of flight & velocity of sound. An integral temperature sensor compensates the velocity of sound value for ambient temperature changes.
The operator can choose to view either: Distance: from the face of the transducer to the surface of the processor or: Level: from the bottom of the tank to the surface of the process or: Temperature: ambient temperature of the sensor environment.
Range is reduced when measuring solids as the granulated surface absorbs the sound wave & scatters the echo. Similar effects can happen in liquid applications if there is foam on the liquid, or turbulence caused by stirrers or vortices near pump suctions. Vapour & steam in heated tanks can also attenuate the signals. These installation issues are often solved by mounting the sensor over a stilling chamber such as a DN100 pipe. The narrow beam angle of 8° solves many installation issues but care should be taken siting the sensor so the beam does not impinge on the tank wall.
